1943년 영국 브리스틀에서 태어나 케임브리지 대학의 세인트존스 칼리지에서 공부하고 런던 대학 코톨드 미술연구소에서 박사학위를 받았다. 하버드 대학과 캘리포니아 대학(버클리 캠퍼스)을 포함하여 영국과 미국의 많은 대학에서 미술사를 가르쳤다. 미술사 분야에서 큰 영향력을 가진 그는 현대 회화를 현대 삶의 사회적ㆍ정치적 상황이 표현된 것으로 본다. 좌파 성향이 두드러지며 스스로도 마르크스주의자임을 자처한다. 저서로 Image of the People: Gustave Courbet and the 1848 Revolution(1973), The Absolute Bourgeois: Artists and Politics in France, 1848~1851(1973), The Painting of Modern Life: Paris in the Art of Manet and his Followers(1985), Farewell to an Idea: Episodes from a History of Modernism(2005), The Sight of Death: An Experiment in Art Writing(2006), The Painting of Postmodern Life?(2009), Picasso and Truth: From Cubism to Guernica(2013) 등이 있다.
